OER and Disciplinary Associations: SPARC Capstone Project by Kristin Whitman

By | August 9, 2023

Kristin Whitman, Library Director, Portland-Metro Campus, at Oregon Institute of Technology, completed her capstone project for the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program. Kristin writes:

My capstone report explores how disciplinary associations (i.e. scholarly and professional associations) represent tremendous potential to grow the open education (OE) movement. To investigate this, I conducted semi-structured interviews with participants knowledgeable about this topic to report on existing ways that disciplinary associations engage in OER work, and the benefits and challenges of doing so. In the conclusion of the report, I proposed best practices for how the open education movement could benefit from engaging with associations in the future. My hope is that this project begins a conversation within the open education community about models for advancing the OE movement through disciplinary associations.
