Penny Feltner and James R. Gapinski, Instructional Specialists at Chemeketa Community College, developed a new Tutor Handbook with support from an Open Oregon Educational Resources grant. The project aligns with College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) standards, and it will be used to support CRLA certified tutor training courses at Chemeketa Community College.
The book covers learning assistance topics such as interpersonal communication, andragogy, learning theory, critical thinking, and other crucial foundational skills. While it is designed explicitly for use in a tutorial context, several chapters are adaptable to programs and classes on supplemental instruction or academic coaching.
In the wake of COVID-19, the anticipated sections of Chemeketa’s CRLA course will likely not be offered until Fall. When the course is taught using this new textbook, the authors will seek student input and revise the book to better meet the needs of the class.
