Archived Webinar: Early Career Educators Use of OER in High School Language Classes

By | October 8, 2025

Are you curious about how high school educators are creating and using OER? This presentation explores two high school teachers’ experiences with creating and sharing OER, what motivates them to create it, the challenges they’ve faced, and what they wished they learned as pre-service teachers.

Emily Blackburn teaches French 1-4 at Mountain View High School in the West Ada School District in Idaho. She also teaches dual credit courses in partnership with Boise State University. She is passionate about creating immersive learning experiences for her students through OER that foster an appreciation for Francophone cultures and real-world language application.

Madelynn Ruhter teaches French levels 1-AP at Capital High School in the Boise School District in Idaho. This is her 4th year teaching and 3rd year teaching dual credit courses with Boise State University. She is passionate about creating authentic experiences and interactions in the target language for students by integrating OER in the classroom.

Together, they have presented at the Idaho Association of Teacher of Language and Culture (IATLC) and the Pacific Northwest Council for Languages (PNCFL) conferences, sharing two OER units that they’ve created, used, and refined over the last 3 years. They will be presenting at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) conference in New Orleans this fall. They continue to collaborate and create new OER for their classrooms and others.
