Open Pedagogy Conference

By | October 26, 2016

Join Open Oregon Educational Resources at Linn-Benton Community College for a one-day conference Friday, December 9, 9-4. Register now!

Open educational practices are pedagogical strategies that use the affordances of open licenses to get students involved in creative activities with real-world audiences. David Wiley is credited with coining the term open pedagogy and contrasts this type of assignment with “disposable assignments” that have no value once a grade is assigned.

Keynote speaker Suzanne Wakim, OER Coordinator, Honors Chair, and Biology Faculty, Butte Community College, has taught biology since 2000. Her website, Butte Biology, documents how she designed her course around guiding biology students to create an open textbook. She will share open pedagogy ideas both big and small in her presentation.

Bring your ideas, teammates, and laptop to discuss your real needs for planning and support in order to redesign courses and programs around high-quality, freely available materials. Registration for Oregon community college participants includes travel reimbursement and lunch. Stipends are available for part-time faculty to attend. Register by 11/28 for first consideration.

If you need to get up to speed on the OER basics before the conference, watch the short OER training videos created by Open Oregon Educational Resources.

Meet at 8:30 for coffee and snacks. Parking at LBCC is free.
